STRAWBERRY SCIACCA AND RIBERA

The Sciacca and Ribera strawberry is a fruit of the forest, small, deep red color, which grows wild on the Madonie Mountains, Nebrodis and on Mount Etna. In addition, it is grown in the area of Agrigento, in the towns of Ribera, Sciacca, Caltabellotta and Menfi. It is not raised in the greenhouse, but only in the open air.

It was brought to Sicily by some Sicilian soldiers, who gathered in the undergrowth of a few places in the Alps, probably in Friuli or Trentino, some wild plants and replanted in the soil of Sicily.

The production of strawberry runs from the early days of April to the first week of June and is harvested by hand as to leave the delicate fruit intact as much as possible.
