SICILIAN BLACK BEE
The Sicilian black bee is a common bee’s subspecies whose natural range is the province of Trapani in Sicily.
It is a bee of African origin naturalized Sicilian, which was saved from total extinction thanks to the studies and researches of a Sicilian entomologist, Pietro Genduso, who subsequently transmitted this passion to a student, Carlo Amodeo, that is still the only beekeeper that breeds and exports bees all over the world.
The Sicilian black bee (Sicilian Apis mellifera) has the abdomen very dark, yellowish hairs and smaller wings. Once it was brought up in the beehives of the ferrule, wooden beehives in the shape of a rectangular box.
Develops early in the brood, between December and January, thus avoiding the blocking of winter brood, common to other species, and consumes less honey than other bees.
