GOAT GIRGENTANA
The Girgentana Goat, a variety from the province of Agrigento, is used for the production of milk. Its name derives from Girgenti (now Agrigento).
The feeding of the goats destinated to the production of milk occurs during grazing or with fodder produced by the enterprise, the integration of the forage is allowed during periods of severe weather conditions and must be made up only of cereals and legumes of the local tradition (barley, bran and beans), grain or flour.
The Girgentana goat is medium in size with long thick and white hair. Has a beard on his chin, and forehead, a thick tuft, which farmers cut as "fringe" (with the exception of the goat).
Absolutely unique to the long spiral horns, still devotes much time to their care: bathe in hot water and caught in iron pipes wrapped in cloth to draw the spiral shape as regular as possible, avoiding their divergence.
Girgentana goat's milk is primarily intended for products such as raw milk and sold fresh. In the twenties and thirties, farmers went from house to house, selling it directly, in practice they milked it door to door.
