ALCAMO DOC

The Alcamo D.O.C. is known especially for the "Bianco d'Alcamo." Its area of production falls in some of the areas of Trapani and Palermo, and includes the territory of Alcamo, Calatafimi-Segesta, Castellammare del Golfo, Gibellina, Balestrate, Camporeale, Partinico, Monreale, San Cipirello and San Giuseppe Jato.

There are news about Alcamo wine since 1549, when Sante Lancerio, sommelier at the Holy See, inserted in the list of the finest wines of the time the Bianco d'Alcamo. However, it is only since 1800 that his fame spread beyond regional boundaries, constituting an element of strong appeal of the area. In 1972 he was recognized as a d.o.c. with the name of Bianco d'Alcamo, then modified in Alcamo in 1999.

The grape is the base of the common White Cataratto, with the possible addition of Damaschino, Grecanico and Trebbiano. Its typicity comes from the fact that the grapes come from Alcamo vines and its quality is due to the richness of the soil, the sun, the hills and, perhaps, to the way in which they are lovingly cultivated and, especially, the geographical location and the climate. This wine is pleasant and has intense aroma, it has a straw yellow color with greenish reflections.

In addition to the White Alcamo you can get red and rosé wines: the d.o.c. also includes varietal wines, sparkling wines, late harvest and weds. The traditional grape varieties used are: Cataratto, Inzolia and Grillo together with the newcomers Chardonnay, Muller Thurgau and Sauvignon among whites; a fair number of black grape varieties, including Nero d'Avola, Nerello Mascalese, Frappato and Perricone for natives and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah among the international red.
