SALT PANS OF TRAPANI AND PACECO
The Nature Reserve of Salt Pans comprehends an area of approximately 1000 hectares and is located in the western part of Sicily.
Along the lagoon, participants can see an amazing panorama: the salt pans appear as sheets of water divided by strips of land, among the different salt pans are distributed old mills that were used as the grinding of salt and water pumping from one tank to another.
The presence of salt in this area has been documented in the period of the Normans. Salt was used to preserve fish and meat.
A small, yet highly interesting salt museum has been set up in a 300-years old saltworkers house: it recounts the different stages involved in collecting salt and displays various specialist tools adapted for its extraction and its harvest.
Participants can observe the process of salt production, today presidium of the association Slow Food and do, weather permitting, a guided tour of the Nature Reserve by sea.
