TRAPANI

Trapani was founded by the Elimi, is known as the City of salt and sailing, is located in the western part of Sicily and is also called the "city of the two seas" because there is the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, while to the west there is the Mediterranean Sea.

Over time, the city has developed important activities, which are based on fisheries (formerly the tuna, with the slaughter), the extraction and trade of marble and coral working.

The Second World War marked the city, with the destruction of the entire district of St. Peter, the oldest of Trapani.

In 1968 there was the earthquake of Belice Valley and in 1965 and 1976 two floods invade the city. Only since the 90s, Trapani revives and enhances its artistic and natural beauties, and its facilities.

CHURCH OF SAN FRANCISCO D'ASSISI

The church, was built in the late sixteenth century. The work lasted until 1638, then the church was consecrated on April 19, 1646.

Internally, a Latin cross scheme is used with a single nave and four side chapels and four horatorys. Since then it has not changed its structure, maintaining the style classicist-Renaissance.

Surprising are the 11 statues by sculptor Christopher Trapani Milanti, representing the virtues: fortitude, zeal, charity, wisdom, doctrine, alms, eloquence, consistency and prudence. Above each of them there is placed a painting representing an episode in the life of St. Francis, and the corresponding virtues personified by the statue.

CATHEDRAL OF SAN LORENZO

The Cathedral of San Lorenzo was built in 1421. It was elevated to a parish in the second half of the fifteenth century. Over time, the cathedral has undergone several changes and has reached its present appearance only in the eighteenth century.

The façade is characterized by a portico with three large arches, on the doorpost of each arch there is the emblem of St. Lawrence.

The interior has a Latin cross scheme and is divided into three naves, divided by two rows of columns. It is decorated with frescoes and stucco neoclassical. Keep canvases depicting: the Crucifixion, painted by Van Dyck, San Giorgio by Andrea Carreca, the Lord by Domenico La Bruna and a statue of the dead Christ by Giacomo Tartaglia.
