ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA SEGESTA

Segesta is an ancient city, founded by the Elimi, located in the north-western part of Sicily. It rises on Mount Bàrbaro, in the area of Calatafimi Segesta. Inside you can admire the ruins of the ancient city walls and the Valley Gate, some residential and some relevant Segesta medieval monuments (city walls, castle, mosque and village). Of particular beauty are the temple and the theater.

The temple was built in 430 BC on the top of a hill on the west of the city, outside its walls. It is a large temple hexastyle (with six columns on the short side). On the long side, has fourteen long columns (36 in total). It was done in the Doric style, in imitation of the great Greek temples, although some particular reveals a different origin. The most obvious difference is that in the Segesta’s one there is not the cell: the heart of the Greek temple.

The researchers discuss at length of the lack of the cell, some argue that the temple is simply remained incomplete. Others, however, justify the distinction of Segesta with a cultural and political reason: the people of Segesta in fact they were not Greeks, as their enemies of Selinunte, but Elimi. They had, then, a different religion and different customs.

The theater was built in the third century. B.C. in the Hellenistic period, is located about 440 meters high on Monte Barbaro. Oriented on the north to the Gulf of Castellammare. The theater could accommodate over 3,000 people. Restored, it is regularly used for theater performances. The cavea is the place where they sat and still sit viewers, it has a diameter of 63 m and is divided in two by a central corridor. The orchestra, semicircular in shape, is the place where moves the choir. Entry is permitted through two openings, the parodoi at the sides of the semicircle. Few rows of blocks are what we can still see of the scene, unfortunately has gone almost completely lost.
